Adult and Nonformal Education Association in Ethiopia (ANFEAE) won the UNESCO 2008 International Literacy Prize for its innovative literacy project known as 'Literacy Plus'. The programme is unique in its nature because it is a community-based approach of teaching business, conflict resolution, disease prevention and etc. The approach appreciates existing good practices and funds of knowledge of the learners by observing and describing community life as it is.
The basic philosophic approach to this initiative is "women are the future of mankind" . It shows that women's role in development of any nation is indispensable. The project demonstrated that project beneficiaries are now self reliant and confident. Women feel good about themselves, better now than before as they are empowered. They anticipate changes in their lives as their future is bright with a better role in the family, with better decision making power, better off economically and actively engaged in social lives.
